Look Ma, We Made It

Hey Sweets!

As Conor and I are doing our nightly couch-sitting, he says to me, “We need to make another blog post.” To which I respond with an annoyed, “I knowwwww,” complete with an eye roll. I mean, doesn’t he know how busy I am?!

But of course I know he’s right. And honestly, I have missed writing these.

Today I’m talking about our journey so far.

We celebrated 6 months of being open on April 26 (holy cow)! It seems like that first day open was a lifetime ago, but at the same time like it was just yesterday. I honestly still can’t believe it. In such a short amount of time, we have done a lot of things, many of them I never thought we’d be capable of. We hired new people (twice), pulled countless all nighters, taken some harsh feedback, navigated a new marriage, and so much more. There are so many stories to tell, I wish I hadn’t procrastinated on writing a post so that I could tell them all. We’d be here all night if I tried.

It’s almost been a year since we found and bought the cute little building that would be the future location for Samantha’s Sweets, found the perfect paint colors, scraped the popcorn ceilings, met with contractors, and waited anxiously for it all to be done! I’ll never forget the day before we opened, October 25, 2018, the kitchen was all set and we were just waiting for the health inspector to arrive at 4:00 PM to give us the go-ahead. And our young little naive selves thought it’d be a great idea to open the next day! In case you missed it before, he didn’t show up until 4:00, which means we didn’t start baking until 5:00 PM! WE WERE INSANE. Needless to say, we were up all night, and got 2 hours of sleep the night before our big “soft” opening. We sold completely out and had to do it all again that night. Did I mention we were insane? I need a face-palm emoji right now…

At that time, I thought we would never sleep again and we would always be doing this by ourselves because how would we ever find time to find and hire new people? And then about a week or two after opening, two of our angels, Trevor and Hope, came to us. We will never forget the day Trevor came in as a customer with his fiancé, and casually mentioned he used to be a Head Chocolatier at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. He started just a few days later. A week or so passes and Conor comes down with some sickness, leaving me to bake and open the shop BY MYSELF. That morning, opening time came, I didn’t have anything ready to put in the case, and I was by myself with no help, so of course I lost it. Hope walks in the door literally 5 minutes after pulling myself up from crying on the floor asking if we needed a cake decorator. GIRL, YES, YOU HAVE NO IDEA. God is so good, y’all. And of course, sweet Abby joined us in January, bringing her bubbly personality and bright ideas. We literally couldn’t have hand-picked a better team to help us build our business. We love them dearly and are incredibly thankful for them, The Bakery Bunch!

Only with these three, our parents, and friends is Samantha’s Sweets what it is today. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to do the things I’m passionate about, which is baking treats for and bringing happiness to others.

Despite all the success we feel that we’ve had, there have most certainly been some rough patches. Unhappy customers and mistakes on our part have given us insight and helped us make improvements, but also customer suggestions have driven us to do some of the things we do. If you’ve been with since day one, it’s easy to see that things are very different today. We wake up 4:00 everyday to bake up fresh things for the case and get ready for the day. This is something I never thought would be possible for us, but here we are, popping out of bed at 4:00 AM. We are definitely still insane, but it’s totally worth it.

The past six and a half months have been a whirlwind of emotions. We’ve celebrated successes, cried over failures, laughed and made memories with our new friends, worried about getting it all done, sacrificed sleep, and (sort of) found some balance. It couldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the Lord’s will in our life and the way he’s brought us through it all. I am so thankful.

We can’t thank you all enough for supporting our dream and believing in us. We hope that we have added value to each of our customers' lives and to the community of Arkadelphia. It’s full of wonderful people and is a great place to call home!

Thank you for taking the time to read this and learning a little more about us and our journey!

Until next time,
